Michelangelo once said, "Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it."
I believe the over all goal of It's Already Inside is to help managers/leaders discover the leader inside them and to give them the necessary tools to mold and develop their leadership. The other goal is to answer the question Are leaders born or made. The answer fits well with Michelangelo's quote ... leaders are made but it takes much sculptoring to find the leader that resides within. This book gives you the tools to chisel away at the rough edges and shape yourself into a true leader.
The author, Robert Murray, has written a very easy to read, conversational style guide to developing your leadership skills. The writing is a collection of his stories and lessons based on his varied and extensive experience.
The book is a quick read. It is a collection of 36 generally short chapters. Each chapter or lesson stands on its own. Most are based on personal experiences of Mr. Murray. Some are very moving, involving very personal experiences.
There is one lesson (chapter) involving rather horrible customer service experience Mr. Murray and his family had in 2004 involving Lufthansa Airlines. What a great example of how much it cost companies when their employees perform their job with little concern for the customer.
There are some very important lessons in this book. Some lessons, if taken to heart, will dramatically change your approach to business and life. I particularly liked the chapter on Yoda. The language/words we use will often lull us into complacency. As Yoda said, "There is only do or dot do. There is no try." And as Mr. Murray points out we often limit our efforts when we use "hope" and "if". If you will eliminate those words from your vocabulary, you will greatly improve your results.
If you are looking for the magic secret, I am afraid this book is not for you. One of the most powerful concepts from this book is, "There is no secret recipe. No magic wand or special water. The only secret is hard work. You want to be successful? Work harder than anyone else. Period. Get up earlier. Work smarter, and keep developing yourself."
At the end of most chapters are a series of questions for the reader to answer. One of the most powerful questions repeated on numerous occasions throughout the book is What would good look like? The lesson is not to strive for or focus on the ideal. Shoot for good. Focus on what is realistic and achievable.
There are so many valuable lessons in this book. But as the author points out many times, the value is not in the information/lessons. The value is in implementing the lessons. Put the lessons into practice. Make mistakes and learn from them.
If you want an easy to read book with some very practical guidelines for gaining admission to the very top group of leaders in business, this is an excellent book.

At the start I should mention that I only found this book because I know the author. Having said that, this is the best practical book on leadership I have ever read - bar none. I'm sharing my observations in the hope that this book may reach a much wider audience. It has so much to offer everyone from individuals starting out on their career to highly experienced leaders.
There are 36 short readable chapters, each packed with pragmatic guidance, insight and inspiration. I had intended to read one chapter a day and then spend some time reflecting on what I had read, but that proved to be impossible. The book is so fascinating and illuminating, I just kept reading!
I am now going to restart again from chapter one (a terrific insight into the attitude and approach of Terry Fox - one of Bob's high school friends) and take my time.
The key things I loved about this book are
1) The breadth of subject matter that is covered
2) This is not a dry theoretical textbook. Bob fills the book with interesting & entertaining real life anecdotes from his career to illustrate the points he is making.
3) This is a treasury of helpful advice and guidance that will enable readers to not only become better leaders but to also improve their decision making skills
4) At the end of each chapter you are asked a series of searching questions. Honest answering of these will create a template for personal and business success
5) Finally, the author is honest enough to discuss situations he got wrong and what he's learnt from them
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This is not an MBA in leadership, it's an account of a life's learning's from a world class leader. The author is committed to helping everyone to becoming better leaders. Reading this book is the first step....................

Reading this book I have reviwed & relived my years of working directly with Bob as my boss.I ve learned key essential things in how to think and act for the benefit of others, and realized that through my family & my people succes and happiness I can find my succes & my hapinness. Great book on developing leadership qualities as you progress through your career and life. Robert tells personal stories that are both inspiring and full of leadership lessons. The book kept me interested right from the beginning through to the end.
This is the perfect book for anyone starting out on the path to becoming a great leader or for experienced leaders looking to gain a different perspective from someone who’s been there and done that. The author’s advice is practical, inspiring and at times down right funny. All in all a great read that I highly recommend!
